Micropitting is mainly caused by material fatigue; the continuous rolling action and friction between two gear teeth can deform and demand elasticity from the material, thus producing micro-fissures on and below the surface of gear teeth; these cracks can progressively expand until they force small pieces of material to detach, leaving a small cavity on the surface. Subsequently, these cavities may progressively expand or merge with other adjacent cavities, causing the release of a large splinter (spalling), which renders gears useless.
