The SAE J2360 specification originated from fluid specifications for U.S. military gears.

Over time, this specification incorporated seal protection and further thermal stability requirements. The inclusion of field tests added more rigor to the standard, as well as multipurpose gear oil assessment tests. Currently, the U.S. army uses SAE J2360-approved lubricants exclusively.

SAE J2360 is also the basis for many OEM specifications.
