Hydraulic lubricant that enables the transmission of force exerted on the brake pedal and cylinders found in passenger cars, motorcycles, and trucks, as well as some high-end bicycles.
Generally manufactured with polygycol-based components; these products must have a high boiling point, as by nature this application generates heat, hence the need to avoid bubble formations that could damage the brakes.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates the quality of fluids on the market.
DOT 3 conventional brakes, with a dry boiling point of 205°C, wet boiling point of 140°C, and a viscosity of 1.5 cSt (typically).
DOT 4 (ABS and conventional brakes): this is a conventional fluid with a dry boiling point of 230°C, wet boiling point of 155°C, and a viscosity of 1.8 cSt (typically).
